Compliance Monitoring

What is the Purpose of Compliance Monitoring?

Monitor large and small vessels in key Southern Resident Killer Whale areas/high vessel density areas with the goal of understanding stressors such as risk of vessel strike, noise pollution, and physical disturbance.

On-water Monitoring

  • Monitoring small vessel compliance to marine mammal distance regulations and SRKW management measures through documentation

  • Identifying and photographing marine mammals

Land-based Monitoring

  • Land-based cameras and hydrophones deployed in SRKW critical habitat areas with high vessel density

  • EMSA (Enhanced Marine Situational Awareness) is being used to monitor cargo vessel speeds within Haro Strait, and small vessel compliance around SRKW sanctuary zones.

  • Identifying and photographing marine mammals
