Together these stories explore the interconnected ecosystems of the Fraser River, its estuary, and the vital role they contribute to the heart of the Salish Sea.

Indigenous Guardians get Results: a Small but Mighty Marine Guardian Program Makes Strides in Data Collection and Monitoring
The post highlights the benefits of Indigenous Guardians for environmental protection and the upholding of Indigenous laws. Specifically, the QENTOL,YEN Marine Guardians Program is recognized for our dedication to protecting the KELŁOLEMEĆEN (killer whales) and upholding the important relationship between W̱SÁNEĆ peoples and the KELŁOLEMEĆEN that has existed for many generations. Since the program’s beginning, we have been able to fill gaps in existing data, better understand KELŁOLEMEĆEN behaviours, and partner with other organizations and Nations to improve data collection and research.

QENTOL,YEN Featured in IED’s latest Newsletter
Earlier this year, our QENTOL,YEN team had the opportunity to meet with the students in the W̱,SENĆOŦEN,IST program at University of Victoria’s Indigenous Education Department (IED) for a field trip to SELE₭TEȽ (Goldstream). We were able to share our habitat monitoring methods at the stream with the class while exchanging stories and learning more about the SENĆOŦEN language. Indigenous Guardians scout vast seas to give Orcas a fighting chance
The article highlights the teams efforts to give the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales a fighting chance. Marine Guardian groups like QENTOL, YEN have been working to better understand and find solutions to protect the KELŁOLEMEĆEN (Killer Whales), their “relatives of the deep”. Through habitat, compliance, and baseline monitoring, QENTOLY, YEN has been collecting data on marine mammals, vessel traffic, salmon abundance, and stream health while integrating W̱SÁNEĆ cultural preservation and collaboration with researchers to create positive change for the SRKW.
