Big Momma and her 2025 baby
June 4th 2025 our team received reports of 2 humpbacks near PEN,ÁW̱EṈ, (Patos Island). After we completed our pinniped monitoring counts off of X̱EMYÁĆ (the Belle Chain Islets) we went south towards the humpbacks to see what ID photos we could capture. After travelling a slow transect off of PEN,ÁW̱EṈ, we finally saw the blow of 2 humpbacks- Big Momma and her 2025 calf. We quickly ID’d them and left them to continue their journey.
After, we noticed a cluster of whale watching vessels near X̱ODEȽ (Spieden Isl.), so, we headed down to see what the group was watching. Upon arriving at X̱ODEȽ, right we immediately saw multiple blows of killer whales in the distance. We took a slow approach towards the whale watching fleet and once we reached the group we continued our compliance monitoring and took numerous shots to get ID photos. We captured KELȽOLEMEĆEN T137A with his unique dorsal fin, and other members of the T137 pod. This group was accompanied by more unknown KELȽOLEMEĆEN in the distance, which we did not pursue for ID.
All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
