K Pod in the Strait of Georgia

March 04, 2026

On March 04 our team heard reports of killer whales in boundary pass, and vocal detections of SRKW in San Juan Channel. While we were transiting towards Boundary Pass, SRKW vocalizations were heard in Boundary Pass. We continued on track, expecting to see the whales far off shore in the Strait of Georgia, but were pleasantly surprised when we heard that they were near East Point, heading North. When we arrived, the whales were porpoising and breaching, travelling fast Northbound. We slowly followed approximately 1km behind. As the whales slowed down, we slowly approach closer to obtain identification photos. It was K pod! This was an exciting sighting for our team as we primarily observe J pod and less often see K and L pods. The whales were extremely spread out across the Strait of Georgia, we only took photos of the few whales closet to us. We turned our engines off and let the whales gain ground on us before starting our ignitions and heading back to the office to upload our photos.

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
