On May 06, 2025 our team was again joined by a member of Ruth Joy’s SFU lab. We spent the morning on XELEXÁṮEM (Rum Island), listening to our hydrophone and discussing the soundscape analysis being conducted on how the acoustic environment impacts SRKW movement at Turn Point. We got news of killer whales in Boundary Pass and made a move to attend the scene. When we arrived, we observed the instantly recognizable T019s. On cliffside of Saturna Island (TEḴTEḴSEN) we watched the meeting of acquaintances, as the T019s travelled east and T049A1 and T049A2 travelled west. We instructed a recreational fishing vessel on cliffside to pull in their lines and to turn off their engine.
Once the killer whales continued on their way, we observed the humpback Graphite travel back and forth along cliffside.
On this day we also observed multiple rhinoceros auklets off TEḴTEḴSEN (East Point, Saturna Island). This is unusual for us, as we usually observe them closer to Vancouver Island.
All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
