ḰENES and KELȽOLEMEĆEN
May 08, 2026
On May 08 our team had an exciting day with multiple whale sightings. We headed travelled west in Boundary Pass in the morning and observed a whale watching vessel with a humpback whale. We attended to monitor marine mammal regulation compliance and obtain ID photos of the individual. We stayed parked with our engines off for nearly 45 minutes as the whale travelled back and forth between YEUWE (Tilley Point) and QENENIW̱ (Brooks Point). Once we obtained ID photos we slowly travelled North into Plumper Sound to continue our monitoring elsewhere. This humpback was identified as Gretzky, a new whale for our team!
As we were heading N into Plumper, we got news of killer whales entering Navy channel. We continued North and then West into navy Channel from Plumper and came across a group of killer whales. We flew our whale flag for a recreational vessel that was travelling at high speed in proximity to the whales and they stopped to view them from a safe distance. We slowly travelled with the whales, from across the channel. As they split up it was challenging to acquire identification photos but have ID’d these whales (with assistance from local network) as T011A, T046Bs, and T046C2. T011A is a large male who is known to frequent the T’Sou-ke area and basin.
All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
