ḰENES

On October 21 the fog was low in the sky and our team set out to stay close to the Marina and conduct some nearby underwater surveys. While on the water, we got notice of a ḰENES (Humpback whale) near Moresby Isl. We headed that way and came across it as it was travelling south through the kelp past our XELEXÁṮEM (Rum Island) hydrophone site. You can see in one of the above photos that this whale carried some bull kelp fronds with them as they continued south. This ḰENES has been identified as Nike, a regular visitor in our waters. He was travelling south with purpose and is likely on his journey to his breeding grounds, in Mexico.

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
