ḰENES in Boundary Pass

October 22, 2025

Early in the morning on October 22, our team received a message about a ḰENES (humpback) off of SDȺY¸ES (Pender Island). Luckily we were heading that way to do some underwater monitoring with our BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) camera! After a slow cruise around the Pender bluffs, there were no signs of the ḰENES until a faint blow in the distance appeared. Our team made our way to observe the ḰENES to gather ID photos. The whale didn’t show their fluke for us, but we obtained dorsal fin images. Once we gathered the images, we finished off our day with BRUVS and the last of our seal haul outs! This whale remains unidentified (for now!).

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
