Double ḰENES at Turn Point

October 30, 2025

On this day our team set out on the water with word of a ḰENES (Humpback Whale) heading south in Active Pass. We travelled slowly north in Swanson Channel and turned our engines off to scan for blows from the whale. With no whales in sight, we pivoted to conduct a BRUV survey off of Wallace Point, the south end of the Pender Vessel Restricted Zone. After our BRUV survey time, when we were returning tor retrieve it, we saw blows in Haro Strait and had located a ḰENES. While slowly approaching this whale to take identification photos we saw more blows from a second whale! One was travelling North into Swanson and one was travelling South into Haro.

We hailed a Tug boat operator who was travelling north towards the whales in Haro to inform them of the whales’ presence and keep our relatives safe from vessel threats.

The whale travelling south has been identified as Two-Spot and the whale travelling North has not been identified as we did not have time to take identification photos before returning to our dock.

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
