On Tuesday Sept. 16, our team set out to conduct pinniped counts and complete our final baited underwater video survey of the Summer season. In Satellite Chanel near SḰEMIN (Piers Island) we were conducting trolling videos with a ‘dummy’ flasher to collect salmon presence data after deploying our BRUV. As we were trolling, we were surprised by a lone male killer whale off our bow. We quickly pulled in the line, turned off our engines, and grabbed a camera for identification photos. The whale surfaced in close proximity to our vessel with the remains of a harbour seal in it’s mouth, and disappeared behind us just as quickly as it had appeared. We’ve identified this whale as T069E.

Afterwards, we were counting seals, we got news of the T075Bs in Boundary Pass. These are the same whales who we saw last week, and who welcomed a new calf in August of this year. We completed our counts and set out to conduct marine mammal compliance of vessels around the whales. We collected data and photos for identification before heading home for the afternoon.

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
